Nancy Shuluga Obituary

Words are inadequate in expressing our sorrow and sadness at the loss of our beloved, wife, mother, Grammy, and sister, Nancy Lee Hayes Shuluga. However, we mingle our grief with rejoicing in the knowledge that she has died into the loving and grace filled arms of Jesus, the living Christ on Friday, April 19, 2024.

Nancy was born on April 3, 1954, the second of five daughters to the late Robert D. Hayes and the late Joyce (Webb) Hayes. She married her high school sweetheart, Russel W. Shuluga on May 4, 1974. They were looking forward to celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. They were blessed with three beautiful daughters, Lee Ann Reardon, Amy Lynn Hurst, and Melanie Joyce Gaebel. With the addition of three beloved sons-in-law to the family: Leo Reardon, Matthew Hurst, and Kurt Gaebel gives proof that love never divides but always multiplies.

Nancy’s pride and joy were her grandchildren, Victoria Reardon, Matthew Hurst, Andrew Hurst, Emmelia Gaebel, Eliana Gaebel, and Alexander Gaebel;  step-grandchildren Kayla Reardon and Leo Anthony Reardon and great-granddaughter, Brynleigh Reardon. Nothing made her happier than making her infamous Grammy cookies for her grand-babies and making sure they were outfitted in style.

Nancy is also survived by her three sisters, Lynn Lytle (Ken), Beth Ann Clark (David), and Brenda Gagliardo (Sam). The Hayes-Hayes as they lovingly call themselves share a bond that even death cannot break.  Nancy is also survived by her sister-in-law Brenda Lee (Shuluga) Anglin (Jeff), and several nieces and nephews and their families.

Nancy surprisingly and unexpectedly became a preacher’s wife when Russel became an ordained pastor in the United Methodist Church. Nancy and Russel made a great team in ministry serving 42 years. Nancy’s gentle faith, sense of humor, and down to earth demeanor endeared her to many. Nancy was a fierce prayer warrior bathing her family in constant prayer. Often Russel would hear her mumbling and would ask, “What did you say?” And she would respond, “I am not talking to you. I am talking to God.”

Over the years, Nancy babysat countless children in their home.  She delighted in working at the quaint Point Marion library.   She was an avid fan of her beloved Pittsburgh Pirates, Penguins, and Steelers, especially when they were winning, and appreciated any and all who would talk sports with her because Russel didn’t have a clue when it comes to sports.

Visitation will be at the Terry Cunningham Funeral Home, Bessemer, PA from 3 to 7 P.M. on Tuesday, April 23, and from 9:30 to 10:30 at the funeral home on Wednesday, April 23, 2024, with a celebration of life service at 11:00 A.M. at the Mount Jackson United Presbyterian Church, Nancy’s home church, with the Rev. Deborah Ackely-Killian officiating. Interment follows in the Westfield Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of family friend, Philip S. Rishel, Herod Funeral Home, Point Marion, Pa.
